Police official relieved over Maguindanao massacre

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine National Police has relieved a major and several militiamen over their alleged involvement in the brutal killing of over 20 people in Maguindanao province, an official said.
Chief Superintendent Leonardo Espina, PNP spokesman, said ordered relieved was Chief Inspector Dicay and several members of the civilian auxiliary unit there after their names were initially dragged as among those who held hostage and killed mostly women and several local journalists.
Those killed were part of a convoy that would be filing certificates of candidacies of local politicians in the province, led by several members of the Mangudadatu clan.
Espina said PNP chief Director General Jesus Verzosa flew to Mindanao to oversee the manhunt operations in Maguindanao and to ensure the immediate arrest suspects in the killings.
Additional police forces have been deployed in these areas for the pursuit operations, Espina added.
